A team of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay has developed a smart stethoscope, that can be able to listen to heartbeats from a certain distance and record them.

The data is sent from the patient’s chest wirelessly to the Doctor through a Bluetooth connection. It will minimize the risk of healthcare professionals contracting the novel Coronavirus from patients.

The team has received a patent for the device that records the auscultated sound and stores it as part of a patient’s health record. This can be shared with other doctors for analysis as well as follow ups.

While Doctors used traditional stethoscopes to analyze and listen to chest sounds of patients likely also in the case of Coronavirus, the patient also diagnosed for shortness of breath leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome, this device will be a better alternative as no contact to the patient is involved there.

Technically, “the stethoscope consists of a tube connected to two earpieces. The tube transmits sounds from the body while eliminating background noise that might interfere with the diagnosis”

“The second advantage is that the stethoscope is able to amplify and filter several sounds and translate them into an electronic signal, which can be further amplified for optimal listening,”

“The signal can then be displayed as a phonocardiogram on a smartphone or laptop. In contrast, a regular stethoscope is limited when it comes to amplifying sounds and there is no way of recording those sounds and sharing from one place to another. Even visualisation is not possible, which means one cannot see the graph and identify abnormalities,” one of the developers said to the media.

The team has already sent 1000 stethoscopes to different hospitals and health care centers across the country, the product has been developed with clinical inputs from various Doctors of Reliance Hospital and PD Hinduja hospital.

Please note that, Coronavirus is a global pandemic, millions of people are affected till now, and the death toll is rising day by day, it will surely help health professionals to provide proper clinical treatments.

We urge you to stay at home, for you, your family & for the society as well.
